The Psych Tech provides basic nursing support and therapeutic interactions as indicated in the patient's treatment plan and contributes in assessing physical, psychological, spiritual and social dimension of psychiatric patients under the direction of a Licensed Practical Nurse and/or a Registered Nurse.  Collaborates with other disciplines in delivering exceptional patient care (eg. Social Services, Case Management, ECT)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates effective therapeutic communication and interactions with patients, provides limit setting when appropriate.
  • Identifies changes in patients that could contribute to an escalation in behavior and redirects as able, reports findings to nurse, and if needed, effectively utilizes de-escalation techniques including CPI in the event of aggressive behavior.
  • Performs activities and groups with patients in collaboration with nursing personnel, social services and other disciplines.
  • Documents appropriately into patient record charting based on skill level and follows established standards and guidelines of the Nursing Services department.
  • Successfully completes job duties within assigned shift; keeps LPN/RN informed of pertinent information or needs that may require follow-up, including pain management.
  • Demonstrates unit-defined competencies as required.
  • Assists licensed personnel with admissions and transfers/discharges.  Assists licensed personnel with updating treatment plans and participated in the treatment planning process. 
  • Assists licensed personnel with procedures and examinations (eg. ECT)
  • Ensures a safe environment by adhering to department policies and procedures (eg 1:1 Observation, Patient Safety/Observation, Fall Prevention)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services related area (e.g. social work, counseling, psychology, sociology, public health, education and or health science).
  • Understanding of and an appreciation for the physical, social and psychological needs of adult and geriatric patients.
  • Minimum 6 months experience working in a mental health setting
  • Completion of CPR and CPI
  • Excellent communication skills to interact verbally with patients, visitors and staff.
  • Ability to manage time and organize daily schedule to meet productivity standards.
  • A positive, service attitude towards patients, team members and customers.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions related to job responsibilities
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility, versatility, and reliability as a team player.
  • Ability to remain calm in less than calm circumstances.
