The Maintenance Worker is responsible for effective and efficient delivery of quality maintenance, repair and construction services throughout South City Hospital.  Works as a team member with administrators, directors, managers, supervisors and employees to provide a safe and customer focused environment.


  • Performs rough and finish construction including basic plumbing, mechanical and electrical of administrative and health care space projects.  Works alone, with other co-workers and / or with manager / supervisory person to ensure adequate scheduling of materials and work, resolution of project issues and completed projects on time and within budget.  100% of assigned corrective maintenance is coordinated with customer prior to and after accomplishment.
  • Based skills and abilities, prepares surfaces for painting or wallpapering as appropriate by removing old wallpaper and/ or paint, washing, scraping, sanding, and filling holes, cracks and joints in a timely manner as requested.  Selects premised paints or prepares paints by thinning; blends paints to match specified colors; applies primer and finishing coats; and cleans and maintains tools and equipment.  Finished surfaces are largely free of noticeable defects.
  • Based skills and abilities, applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and other structures.  Uses brushes, spray gun, or print rollers neatly, appropriately.  Applies wallpaper and vinyl wall coverings, cove base and Mercer strips.  Properly measures work area and materials, cuts materials to size and applies to surface.  Majority of callbacks are limited to touchup of completed work.
  • Construction tasks include the following and other related tasks; General maintenance, repairs, overhauls and construction; installation of locks, doors and hardware; ceiling systems and related light fixtures; flex ducting, registers and return air grills; cabinets, shelving and counter tops; painting, flooring and miscellaneous finish work and cleanup.  Dust controls are used when needed.  All tasks are completed as scheduled by the manger and with few call backs for corrections.  Work area is left clean at the end of each day.
  • Construction management tasks include the following and other related tasks:  Coordinate and assist other trades, schedule work and material deliveries, prioritize work, estimate materials, read and productively use blueprints and shop drawings, perform pre- and post-construction inspections, work with fire departments and local government inspection staff, and secure building permits.  Ensures the interim life safety program (ILSM) is used and documented for all projects that affect egress, fire alarms, and/or the sprinkler system.  100% of projects receive a pre project ILSM analyses.
  • Maintains, repairs and installs variety styles of locks and hardware.  Assist customers with opening locks.
  • Performs after hour tasks as assigned by the Manager /supervisory personnel and initiated by individual to ensure continued safe operations of hospital functions and patient care.  Related tasks include work such as snow removal, disaster response. And off shift work as needed by hospital schedule and emergency work.
  • Performs work-using safe and proper procedures.  Maintains skill and knowledge levels in proper use of personal protective equipment and in major safety programs such as Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space, Burn Permit, Tuberculosis, Asbestos and Hazard Communications.  Accurately documents all related work.  Keeps work areas clean and neat.  Ensures the safe environment of assigned job sites and work areas.  Keeps work areas clean and neat.  Ensures the safe environment of assigned plant areas, mechanical rooms and job.  Adheres to all safety requirements regarding work throughout the facility.  Takes immediate action to correct all safety hazards or practices as soon as identified
  • Maintains and ensures proper use and levels of shop stock.  As assigned, procures parts, supplies and equipment according to established hospital policies and procedures.  Properly documents material and supply orders.
  • Maintains awareness of department and hospital facility and equipment needs.  Works with managers to ensure the needs are considered during the budget process.
  • Performs other duties in related fields as assigned.  Assists others as based on individual level of skill and knowledge.


  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Previous carpentry experience.
  • Some mechanical, plumbing and/or electrical experience allowing safe use of basic skills.

  • Cabinet and door hardware repair and installation skills.
