The Employee Health Specialist is responsible for managing employee injuries, worker’s compensation, and other general health and wellness programs to meet the needs of the hospital and in accordance to regulations and hospital policies and procedures.


  • Initiates and gives pre-employment and annual health testing to employees in a courteous helpful manner and according to established procedures. Schedules applicants/employees with physician as appropriate and handles necessary follow-up in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provides appropriate nursing care for employees with work-related injuries in a helpful and courteous manner according to established procedures. Completes all appropriate necessary documentation and follow-up. Contacts physicians’ offices as indicated to make appointments or obtain appropriate follow-up care for employees.
  • Plans, organizes and directs function and activities of employee health service department, by developing and implementing goals and objectives that are consistent with the hospital’s mission, philosophy and policies.
  • Plans a health program to meet current needs of the hospital including both pre-employment and annual health testing, and independently suggests/recommends changes to the employee health program that are within hospital guidelines.  Incorporates new or changed policies into appropriate policy manuals in a timely manner.  Maintains the Employee Health Policy Manual.
  • Coordinates Workers’ Compensation documentation and follow-up with the hospital’s Workers’ Compensation insurance provider and Human Resources department, completing all required paperwork accurately and within established time frames.  Ensures OSHA log is maintained per regulations.
  • Actively participates in quality management planning and activities as assigned, providing suggestions and recommendations as appropriate. Actively participates on various committees relative to employee health and/or service performance assessment and improvement activities.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and ensures appropriate preventive maintenance and working order of equipment used within department in accordance with established department procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Must have knowledge of growth and development and show clinical expertise for ages of patients serviced, including adolescent and adult. Possesses the ability to understand and react effectively to employees’ needs.
  • Eligible for or currently licensed as a LPN or RN in the State of Missouri.
  • Experience in Occupational/Employee Health
  • Experience as a staff nurse in an acute care hospital setting
  • Familiarity with worker’s compensation programs and OSHA reporting
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Evaluative skills necessary for patient assessment
  • Decision making skills required for treatment planning/implementation
  • Clinical reasoning and judgment skills necessary for evaluation of nursing interventions and for safety of employees and self
  • Excellent communication skills to interact verbally with employees.
  • Ability to recognize need for and alter communication with employees with communication impairments.
  • Ability to manage time, organize daily schedule to meet productivity standards, and cope with professional stress
  • Ability to take charge in emergency situations
  • Ability to take occasional call off-hours for emergent needs
