The Surgical Technician is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation under the direction of a Registered Nurse.  The Surgical Technician functions within the limits of  South City Hospital and Nursing Services policies and practice guidelines, and performs in a comparable manner to peers with similar training, experience and circumstances.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with the physical and psycho-social dimensions of the patient under the direction of a Registered Nurse, within the scope and knowledge and experience base, upon admission and throughout the surgical process.  Documents appropriately into the patient record following established standards of the Nursing Services Department.
  • Organizes each surgical procedure by utilizing knowledge and communication.  Keeps the clinical area clean, organized, and equipment in working order for each case.  Case planning consistently demonstrates knowledge of surgeon’s plan of intervention relating to specific surgical procedures.  Demonstrates knowledge of and application of principles of asepsis in each area of use, coordinating the counts with the surgical process and the circulator and documenting their correctness.
  • Provides quality patient care by being consistently scrubbed and set up for surgery when surgeon enters the room.  Demonstrates knowledge of instruments and equipment.  Work flow is enhanced by consistently communicating needs and outcomes with team members.  Patient safety is assured by considering surgical counts as a priority.
  • Demonstrates interest in self improvement by recognizing knowledge deficits and seeking information.  New information about procedure needs is communicated to team members and information is updated consistently.  Assures continues instrument set quality by routinely removing broken or impaired instruments and identifying them for repair.
  • Consistently replaces instruments and supplies to original place of origin.
  • Assumes accountability for patient care through established policies and procedures.
  •  Assumes accountability for professional growth by participating in continuing education and in-service programs.  Accepts reassignment to other areas/shifts and participates in the orientation program as required.
  • Knowledgeable in all services offered at facility or ability to learn within one year of employment.
  • Demonstrates unit-defined competencies as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.   

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE 

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Surgical Technology or evidence of comparable on the job training. 
  • Certification within one year of hire, if not certified at time of hire.
  • Two (2) years recent hospital experience required.
  • Completion of Cardiopulmonary (CPR)
  • Evaluative skills necessary for patient safety.
  • Decision making skills required for treatment planning/implementation.
  • Clinical reasoning and judgment skills necessary for evaluation of interventions and for safety of patients and self.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact with patients, visitors and staff.  Ability to recognize need for and alter communication with patients with communication impairments.
  • Ability to manage time, organize daily schedule to meet productivity standards, and cope with professional stress.
